“Not Your Average Slumber Party”2017-01-25T02:00:28+00:00

Prajna created these private evening programs to empower young girls to defy and challenge the national statistics they face regarding their health and safety related to a variety of issues, including binge drinking, unwanted sex, and teen pregnancy. Our slumber parties inform and educate teen girls while creating a forum in which they can ask questions regarding a variety of challenging issues. Most importantly, they provide space for girls to realize the importance of emotional literacy and to practice asserting themselves around issues they face every day but are rarely talked about. The issues we address include sex education, safe sex guidelines, drugs & alcohol, how to define and communicate personal values, how to educate others about how you want to be treated, and how to defend yourself, if necessary.

Each slumber party workshop is designed specifically to the needs and desires of the participants through a brief consultation. The actual “Slumber Party” involves three to twenty girls and takes place at one of the girls’ homes for 2-3 hours in the evening or on a weekend. Follow up visits are optional.

This private evening workshop was created to empower young girls to defy and challenge the national statistics they face regarding their health and safety: More and more, we see girls who are intellectually assertive but when they are uncomfortable or afraid, they lack the practice or skills to take care of their bodies and their hearts. We want to reduce teen experiences that result in guilt, shame, or tragedy.

  • 1 in 5 teens has had sex before the age of 20.
  • One in four girls are sexually assaulted before they are 21.
  • 75% of male students, 55% female students in acquaintance rape were drinking or using drugs.
  • In a 2004 national poll, 58% of teen girls and 44% of teen boys do not remember losing their virginity because they were drunk.
  • More than 4 in 10 teen girls get pregnant before age 20.
  • Nearly 1 in 4 sexually active young people contract an STD every year.

We started tailor-making slumber party visits for teen girls to inform, educate, and to allow a place for girls to ask questions regarding a variety of challenging issues. The issues we address include sex education, safe sex guidelines, how to define and communicate one’s values, how to educate others how to treat you and to defend yourself if necessary. We also talk about how it is often easy to know what you want to say before you get in trouble, but when you are in the middle of a conflict, it is more challenging. We discuss how to deal with that discomfort.

We found that an intimate, relaxed, and (yes, even) fun setting is an ideal way to impart such relevant and crucial information. An average workshop includes the following:

  • An hour and a half visit from one to two of our health educators between 6pm and 9pm.
  • We work with groups of four to twelve girls per party.
  • You provide the munchies.
  • We provide everything else depending on your request of topics.

Our slumber party workshops create a place to talk about real issues that affect the lives of teenagers outside the classroom as well as provide tools for them to take care of themselves and each other. There is no judgment or preaching, just facts and relevant life skills. Our visits help girls avoid making decisions they will regret and to prevent ending up a statistic. No, it’s not a taffy pull and there are no crank calls to boys involved, but it will still be one of the most entertaining and valuable nights of your daughter’s life.
